Tignes is one of the best ski areas to come to for a long, snow-sure season. The main resort on the edge of Le Lac sits at an altitude of 2100m above sea level while the lower villages still boast altitudes of 1550m and 1850m. Above all of this is the Grande Motte Glacier, which rises to a lofty 3450m and is accessible not only during winter but in the summer too. Yes, you can come summer skiing in Tignes.
The old town of Tignes disappeared beneath the waters of the Lac du Chevril when the valley was dammed in 1952. Now the resort is made up of many smaller purpose-built villages at varying altitudes, with Tignes-Le-Lac generally classed as the main one. The entire resort is built around the needs of the skier, so there is never a lift too far from the front door of your accommodation.
With Tignes being one of the more affordable French ski resorts, it has always attracted families and large groups of university students and friends. As such, the nightlife and dining options ensure there is something to suit every taste and budget. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes to welcome you in from the winter cold for lunch, dinner or some of the best apres-ski fun in the Alps.
